About us

  • In 1992, Frances T. Bourne, literacy advocate and former archivist, founded Friends of Jacaranda Library. Its goal was to raise funds for building and furnishing a new library in Venice, Florida.

  • During 1994, voters approved a one-cent surtax toward building the library.

  • The Jacaranda Public Library opened on January 15, 1994.

  • As a tribute, Jacaranda Public Library changed its name to Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Library on December 10, 1995.

  • Through 2004, an expansion project doubled the library’s interior and added exterior features including a walking path with musical sculpture garden overlooking a small lake.

Through operating a Book Shop and fund-raising activities, the Friends of Jacaranda Library continue to support the library by purchasing books, furnishing, and technical equipment for the library.

The Friends of Jacaranda Library also sponsor children, youth and adult community programs held at the library.
